Emmy Awards Then & Now
The Emmys have been known as the Oscars of the television industry ever since the first awards were given out by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1949.
In the 1950's, the name "Emmy" was a feminization of "immy", the nickname for image orthicon tubes used in early television cameras. Today, the annual broadcast is watched by more than 600 million viewers around the world.
